World's Largest Gold Deposit Found, Valued at Over US$80 Billion
A vast deposit of high-grade gold ore, containing around 1,000 metric tons (1,100 US tons) of gold, has been uncovered in central China, as reported by Chinese state media.
Valued at approximately 600 billion yuan (US$83 billion), this find is potentially the largest and most valuable gold reserve ever discovered, surpassing the 900 metric tons estimated to be contained in South Africa's South Deep mine, long considered the world's richest gold deposit.
The extent of undiscovered gold ore around the world remains uncertain, with experts divided on whether we've reached "peak gold."
Gold, formed in the fiery furnaces of stars long before Earth came into existence, is a finite resource that takes eons to accumulate into forms that are economically viable for mining.
However, these recent findings suggest that we may not be close to depleting such reserves. Core samples taken from around the edges of the Hunan deposit indicate that the gold vein could extend beyond initial estimates, transforming this site into a truly vast treasure trove.
